What To Wear: Family Photo Session

It's official, October is almost over. Crazy, right?

As we near November and the year continues to fly by, the time has come to start thinking about holiday cards and family photos! Although preparing for the holidays can be stressful, there is no doubt that this season is magical, and getting family photos done to remember it is so important. If you are trying to figure out outfits for your family photos this holiday season, here is how to do just that.

(Wanting to get some family photos done for this holiday season? Good news. I have mini session slots available! All of the details will be at the end of this post. If you are interested, be sure to book early as they fill up fast! Click here to book your session.)

Pick A Color Palette.

Start by picking out 2-3 colors that will complement each other. While you don't want to completely match everyone, it is important for the outfits to be coordinated in some way. Whether it's traditional holiday colors like green, red, and whites or rusty oranges, reds, and blacks, be sure to choose whatever colors best reflect your style and family dynamic!

Another point to pay attention to is to ensure that everyone looks like they are going to the same place. If you are dressing up, everyone else should too. If you want a more bohemian, laid back look, make sure everyone's outfits match that in some way.

Figure Out What You Will Wear

Now that you have chosen your color palette, it will start to get easier from here. If you still don't know where to begin with choosing the outfits for everyone, start simple: your outfit.

Picking out what you want to wear first helps so much to give you a baseline for when you go to pick out the rest of your family's outfits. Whatever you choose, make sure that you feel comfortable and confident in it! There is nothing worse than not loving what you are wearing while getting photos taken and sometimes it can show in the pictures too.

Keep In Mind The Season and Location

If your session is outside in the fall, remember to dress warm! If you are getting your photos done around the holidays for Christmas cards, maybe wear outfits that will suite the time of year.

Location can also be a big determining factor for you when you are deciding on the color palette. If it is outside around a lot of foliage, choose outfits and colors that will compliment the surroundings.

Limit Patterns.

You're going to want to limit the number of patterns there are between all of the outfits to avoid distractions in the photos. Keeping patterns in accents is always a good idea to keep an outfit from looking too busy! For example, your son could wear a plaid collared shirt with a pullover navy sweater so that just the plaid collar sticks out as a simple accent.

In the end, remember to have fun and enjoy the experience. Even if it gets a little hectic this time of year, it is always important to remember to slow down, look around, and live in those pockets of joy more often.
